This is great news for iPhone developers. Now developers will be able to release one version of their applications and offer in app upgrades like new levels, content, music, etc. It gives users a chance to try-before-buy and it gives developers a huge potential upside for their loyal customers.
The other thing to consider is this will change how things like “top apps” are gauged. Currently there are the “Top Free” and “Top Paid” categories in the app store. How will this impact those? Are new metrics required? Most likely. Either way, this is a great move for Apple and the whole iPhone ecosystem.
The next question for developers is, of course, implementation. In App Purchase works by the user purchasing content directly in the iPhone application. Once Apple does the transaction, they leave it up to the developer to deliver the content to the device and keep it up to date. Enter Urban Airship’s StoreFront.
